Year 5 welcome presentation 2025

AUTUMN TERM 2025

Welcome to Year 5! Pupils have made a positive start to the new academic year. We have focussed on settling into our new classes and exploring our new learning environments. We are looking forward to an exciting year together.

A key focus in Year 5 will be reading. We want all children to love reading through a rich and varied curriculum. Pupils are encouraged to read at home five times a week, with signatures in organisers. Children will read for pleasure every day; we invite pupils to bring a book from home with them for this. Additionally, each class has a text for shared reading. Finally, we will be reading a class reader at the end of the day.

In English, we will study a unit on fables before moving on to Robin Hood. The legends of his daring deeds will serve as the inspiration for our writing up to October half term. Later in the term we will be studying Clockwork by Philip Pullman. Clockwork is an exciting novel, full of suspense and twists.

Our maths lessons will build on prior learning from Year 4. We will begin with a unit on place value. This sets pupils up in a strong position before we move on to addition and subtraction, multiplication and division; before finishing the term with a significant unit of work on fractions. After all the hard work preparing for the multiplication check in Year 4, I would strongly recommend pupils to continue using TT Rockstars regularly at home to maintain these superb skills.

In science, we will be studying Earth and space. We will be exploring space and the Earth’s position in it, before learning about the history of space exploration. We will build up to learn about the lunar cycle and how our seasons change.

Our first topic is Vikings. Here we will be exploring the role the Vikings played in shaping our history by asking if they were raiders, traders or something else. We have a range of engaging lessons planned to captivate our pupils. This topic learning in autumn term will directly support our later learning in English during the spring term.

During Year 5, pupils have Forest School. Forest School sessions will run in order 5D, 5P, 5S. Each class will have two half terms of Forest School during Year 5.

We look forward to meeting as many of you as possible at the upcoming information evening. If you have any experience that you feel could enhance any of our learning this term, please do get in touch. Here’s to an exciting year!

Curriculum Overview

You can find more details of the Dorridge Primary Curriculum and Subject pages on the menu to the left. At the beginning of every unit of study we will be sending out a letter to parents that explains the sort of things that are being covered in the unit. Copies of these letters are available from the links below, as well as an overview for this year group.
