AUTUMN term 2025

We’re so excited to welcome your children to Year 3 as we start a new adventure together in Key Stage 2! This term is packed with learning and fun, and we’re diving straight in.

Right from the beginning, Year 3 will be buzzing with books! Alongside their own reading books from the library and reading scheme, each class will enjoy a special novel each term. These stories help boost vocabulary, spark imagination, and build comprehension skills during daily Shared Reading lessons. Each class has a different book, so ask your child what they’re reading! We really appreciate your support reading at home at least five times a week—just a little daily reading makes a huge difference across all subjects.

In English, we’ll start with fractured fairy tales—familiar stories with a twist! Think ‘Goldilocks and the Three Grizzly Bears’. Pupils will use their creativity to reimagine characters and settings when writing their very own twisted narrative; before moving on to writing some fantastic non-fiction in the second half of the term. In maths, we’re kicking off with place value, stretching our number skills up to 1,000. Then we’ll focus on addition and subtraction. Practising number bonds (within 10, 20 and 100) and times tables at home will really help boost confidence and accuracy within the classroom. Science is getting wild—and a little messy! We’ll begin by learning about skeletons in humans and animals, including a fascinating owl pellet dissection to discover what’s left from their last meal. Later, we’ll explore light sources and how light travels. We’ll also be travelling way back in time to the Stone, Bronze, and Iron Ages. In history, pupils will explore how early Britons lived, hunted, made tools, and farmed. Each week, they’ll dig deeper into how life changed over thousands of years and decide which age they’d most like to live in. With hands-on activities and historical detective work, it’s going to be a fascinating journey into Britain’s distant past. Get ready to explore the jungle! In geography, we’ll explore tropical rainforests—discovering where they are, why it rains so much, and who lives beneath the trees. We’ll also learn why rainforests matter to all of us, even here in the UK, and how to protect them. In RE, children will learn about Christianity.

Music starts with the song ‘Let Your Spirit Fly’ before moving onto our second unit where pupils will learn to read, play and perform the glockenspiel.

Our weekly PE sessions will be on a Friday - please remember to send your child into school in their PE kit. Forest School will run on a rota: 3D this half term and 3P in Autumn 2. This is instead of P.E. Further details can be found in your child’s Home School Organiser.

It’s shaping up to be a fantastic term full of exploration, creativity, and curiosity. If you have any experience or knowledge related to the topics we’re learning about—whether it’s archaeology, rainforest travel, animal biology or storytelling—we’d love to hear from you! Please speak to your child’s teacher.
