PSHE

Curriculum Intent

At Dorridge Primary School we believe that PSHE is an entitlement for all children, supporting them in managing their lives now and preparing them for an adult life in which they are able to manage relationships confidently. We believe PSHE is lifelong learning about physical, moral and emotional development. It is about the understanding of the importance of marriage for family life, stable and loving relationships, respect, love and care. The intent of PSHE is to help and support young people through their physical, emotional and moral development.

Curriculum Implementation

At Dorridge we follow the Jigsaw scheme of work supported by the Local Authority for the teaching of Personal, Social, and Health Education (PSHE). We believe that this scheme is relevant and appealing for children growing up today. It is a comprehensive and completely original PSHE programme for the whole school from Nursery through to Year 6 with lessons delivered in an age and stage appropriate way to meet children’s needs. There are two aims for all children: to build their capacity for learning and to equip them for life.

All year groups work on the same theme, known as 'Puzzles', at the same time, there are 6 'puzzles' taught over the course of the year. A theme is started in an assembly at the beginning of each half term to raise awareness of the focus for the next six weeks. The assemblies are designed to draw out a key theme and reinforce its application; in turn, this ensures the Jigsaw learning is translated into behaviour and attitudes and is not confined to the lesson slot on the timetable. Jigsaw brings together PSHE, emotional literacy, mindfulness, social skills and spiritual development to promote positive mental health and well-being. Each class has a wealth of PSHE stories linked to the themes taught to embed reading at the heart of all we do and to reinforce key objectives.

The Jigsaw approach also incorporates the British Values of: Respect, Democracy, Tolerance, and Rule of Law and Liberty. The following link provides a document that details how the core concepts of British Values, set out in the Government's definition in the 2011 Prevent Strategy, are reinforced regularly through the Jigsaw curriculum.

Relationships and Sex Education

Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) has a vital role to play in contributing to the personal and social development of the children in our care. From when a child begins school, teachers play a very significant part in helping children understand themselves and how they relate to others. It is therefore firmly rooted in the Jigsaw curriculum for PSHE.

The Jigsaw RSE curriculum will help young people learn to respect themselves and others and move with confidence from childhood through adolescence into adulthood.
