Together we play, learn and succeed

Mathematical Development

At Dorridge Primary School, we aim to develop confident and enthusiastic mathematicians through a mastery approach to maths. Within EYFS, children are encouraged to explore mathematical concepts through practical experiences, play, discussion and problem-solving in meaningful and engaging ways.

Children take part in daily maths teaching alongside opportunities to apply their learning throughout the indoor and outdoor environment. Through carefully planned activities, children develop a deep understanding of number, counting, patterns, shape, measure and mathematical language. We encourage children to notice patterns, explain their thinking and develop confidence when solving problems independently and collaboratively.

Our mastery approach focuses on developing secure foundations and a deep understanding of mathematical concepts rather than rushing through content. Children are supported to explore ideas using practical resources, visual representations and rich mathematical talk, helping them build confidence and fluency over time.

In Nursery, children begin exploring early mathematical concepts through songs, counting, sorting and play-based experiences. As children move into Reception, they build upon these foundations through more structured teaching, deeper mathematical thinking and opportunities to apply their learning in a range of meaningful contexts.
