Our School Dog

   Willow

Willow is a retired police dog who has had an exciting and purposeful working life. She is now ready for a calmer environment while still enjoying meaningful activity. Despite being retired, she remains bright, alert and eager to be busy, and we feel that a school setting will offer her both stimulation and routine.

There is strong evidence that school dogs can positively influence children’s wellbeing and learning. They can help children to feel calm, supported and confident—especially those who may find certain aspects of school life more challenging.

“Reading to dogs has been proved to help children develop literacy skills and build confidence, through both the calming effect the dogs’ presence has on children and the fact that the dog will listen to the children read without being judgemental or critical.” — The Kennel Club

In addition to supporting learning, Willow may also work alongside staff to support children’s emotional wellbeing, helping them to regulate their emotions, build resilience and develop positive behaviour in line with our school expectations.

We are mindful that having a dog in school requires careful planning and management. A full risk assessment has been completed, and all necessary procedures are in place. Willow is always under the direct supervision of a trained adult, remains on a lead when moving around school, and is never be left alone with children.

We also understand that some children may feel nervous around dogs or may have allergies. No child will ever be required to interact with Willow, and alternative arrangements will always be made where needed. We hope, however, that for some children, observing calm and positive interactions may help them to build confidence over time.
