Welcome to Year 4
AUTUMN term 2025
We are delighted to welcome your children to Year 4 and are looking forward to the exciting year ahead. The children have made a great start and we are already impressed by their enthusiasm and positive attitude to learning.
This term in English, we will be exploring a range of high-quality texts, including The Promise by Nicola Davies, The Butterfly Lion by Michael Morpurgo, and The Jabberwocky by Lewis Carroll. These texts will support the development of reading comprehension, vocabulary, and writing skills. The children will also build their speaking and listening skills through drama and discussion.
In maths, we will begin with Place Value before moving on to Addition & Subtraction, Multiplication & Division, and Perimeter. A key focus this year will be learning all times tables up to 12 x 12 in preparation for the statutory multiplication check in June 2026. We’ll use a range of fun and engaging activities to help children gain confidence and fluency.
Science
Our first Science topic is Classification. Children will learn how to group living things based on shared characteristics and will use classification keys to identify various animals and plants.
In History, we’ll be exploring how childhood has changed over time, comparing the lives of children in different eras. In Geography, we’ll be asking where our food comes from and exploring food production and global trade.
Art and Design & Technology
In Art, children will develop their drawing skills by exploring tone, texture and proportion. In DT, they’ll design and build a pavilion structure, learning key construction techniques.
P.E. and Music
P.E. will take place every Wednesday afternoon, led by our Sports Coaches. Please make sure children come to school in their P.E. kit on Wednesdays.
We’re also pleased to offer weekly guitar lessons on Friday afternoons, led by Solihull Music Service. This is a fantastic opportunity for all children to learn a musical instrument. Children are provided with a guitar which they will bring home each week.
Each day, children will take part in the Daily Mile, which gives them a chance to get moving, refresh their minds and stay healthy.
Your Child Needs in Year 4:
Please ensure your child brings the following to school each day:
A named water bottle
A sensible pencil case (small enough to fit in their drawer), containing pencils, a ruler, rubber, and glue stick
We are very much looking forward to a fun, enriching and successful year with your children. Thank you for your continued support—it makes a big difference, and we really value the partnership between school and home.
If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
