Reception

At Dorridge, we provide children with a safe, secure and enabling environment where adults are warm, attentive and highly skilled in supporting early development. We are committed to developing the whole child, ensuring children grow socially, emotionally, physically and academically as they explore all areas of the Early Learning Goals. Through carefully planned interactions, we encourage children to explore, talk, think and become increasingly independent in their learning. Our curriculum is built around meaningful concepts that help children make sense of the world, alongside a strong focus on communication, language and early writing. Adults model language, scaffold ideas and support children to develop confidence in expressing themselves, before gradually guiding them towards independence. High-quality teaching, combined with a deep understanding of each child, ensures that all children make strong progress from their starting points.

Life in Reception at Dorridge Primary School is filled with excitement, curiosity and opportunities to learn through play, exploration and meaningful experiences. Our carefully planned environment provides a balance of adult-led teaching and high-quality continuous provision, allowing children to develop confidence, independence and a love of learning.

Throughout the day, children take part in daily phonics, reading, writing and maths sessions alongside rich opportunities to explore both the indoor and outdoor environment. High-quality texts, imaginative play, practical experiences and strong adult interactions help children to develop language, creativity and a deeper understanding of the world around them.

We are passionate about creating a warm, nurturing and engaging environment where every child feels happy, supported and inspired to play, learn and succeed.

Our continuous provision is carefully planned to provide children with rich opportunities to explore, investigate and apply their learning independently. Through both the indoor and outdoor environment, children are encouraged to follow their interests, make choices and develop confidence as active learners.

Each area of provision is thoughtfully enhanced to support the current curriculum, children’s next steps and key concepts being taught throughout the term. Opportunities for communication, reading, writing, mathematics, creativity and problem-solving are woven throughout the environment to ensure learning is meaningful and purposeful.

Adults play an important role within continuous provision by modelling language, extending thinking and supporting children to deepen their understanding through play and exploration. This balance of adult interaction and child-led learning helps children to become curious, independent and resilient learners.

Outdoor learning is an important part of life in Reception and children access the outdoor environment every day in all weathers. Our outdoor provision provides rich opportunities for exploration, investigation, physical development and imaginative play, supporting all areas of the curriculum through hands-on experiences.

Children take part in a wide range of activities, including water play, construction, mud kitchen experiences, creative play, mark making, problem-solving and nature exploration. The outdoor environment encourages children to take risks safely, develop independence and build confidence through active learning and discovery.

We believe children learn best when they are engaged, curious and able to explore the world around them. Please ensure children come to school with appropriate clothing, including a waterproof coat and wellies, so they can fully access outdoor learning throughout the year.

Messy play is an important part of learning in Reception and provides children with rich opportunities to explore, investigate and create using all of their senses. Through hands-on experiences, children develop curiosity, confidence and independence while making sense of the world around them.

Children take part in a wide range of messy play experiences including water play, painting, mud kitchen activities, sensory trays, malleable materials and creative exploration. These experiences support communication and language, physical development, creativity, problem solving and early scientific thinking in meaningful and engaging ways.

We encourage children to explore freely, take risks safely and develop their imagination through play. Although messy play can sometimes look a little chaotic, it plays a vital role in supporting children’s learning, wellbeing and development across the curriculum.

As part of our Physical Development curriculum, the children take part in weekly FootiBugs sessions, led by experienced coaches. Using fun, football-based activities, the children not only build their physical skills such as coordination, balance and control, but also develop important personal and social skills.

Through games and team challenges, children learn to listen carefully, share, take turns and work together, supporting the Early Learning Goals for Physical Development and Personal, Social and Emotional Development. These sessions are active, engaging and designed to build confidence, teamwork and a love of being active.

Our aim is for every child to feel confident, capable and ready for the next stage of their learning journey.
