SPRING TERM 2026

Happy New Year from all of us in Year 5! We hope you had a restorative and restful break.

In our English lessons, we will start the term by focusing on journeys, using ‘Journey to Jo'burg' as our whole class text and 'The Highwayman' as our poem.  In science, we will be looking at 'Materials and their properties' and 'Forces', which involves many fun practical experiments and investigations. In maths, we will continue to work on our written methods for calculations; look at the relationship between fractions, decimals and percentages; calculate area and perimeter: and begin to process statistics. Our previous unit on fractions set the groundwork, our next fractions unit will prepare us to investigate their relationship with decimals and percentages. Our new geography topic, Why Oceans Matter, will explore the importance of our oceans and investigate the impact we have on them. After half term, we have a history unit where pupils will learn what life was like in Tudor England. In art, we will be exploring print and different sources of inspiration. Furthermore, how lines can be used for emphasis or to draw attention.

5S will be doing Forest School in the first half term and then 5D in the second half term, more information for Forest School will follow on Dojo.

This term we will be encouraging pupils to develop the responsibility and pride they take in their home learning. We have been impressed with the homework completed on Mathletics and in homework books so for. Now we need to focus on home reading and TTRS. From reading a range of books at home to achieve more reading certificates; to raising the percentage of pupils logging on to Times Tables Rock Stars each week. We know Year 5 will rise to the occasion. Here’s to another fantastic term together.

Curriculum Overview

You can find more details of the Dorridge Primary Curriculum and Subject pages on the menu to the left. At the beginning of every unit of study we will be sending out a letter to parents that explains the sort of things that are being covered in the unit. Copies of these letters are available from the links below, as well as an overview for this year group.
