Year 5 welcome presentation 2026

AUTUMN 2026

In English, we will start the year by exploring Robin Hood, with the children getting straight into narrative writing as they produce their own adventure story. In the second half of the autumn term, we will use Clockwork by Phillip Pullman as the inspiration for our writing. Both stories are exciting and engaging, with lots of tension and suspense throughout. We are looking forward to the writing that is produced as a result!

Our maths lessons will build on prior learning from Year 4. We will begin with a unit on place value, which will set the pupils up with a strong foundation before moving onto the four operations (addition, subtraction, division and multiplication). Finally, the term will finish with fractions – a significant unit in year 5. After all the hard work that went in throughout year 4 by the children in preparing for the multiplication check, we would love for them to keep this going and to keep practising as much as possible! Times tables underpin so many of the maths units we will cover, and having quick recall of these facts is hugely beneficial and makes other areas of maths significantly easier. As a result, continuing to play Times Table Rockstars regularly is hugely encouraged to ensure they are embedded!

In science, we will be studying Earth and space, which is an excellent unit that never fails to inspire. We will explore the different planets in our solar system, how the Earths orbit and rotation creates both day and night, and the seasons, as well as the history of space exploration. Within the unit, we also find out about the lunar cycle and much more! As well as this, we have our exciting trip to the Space Centre coming up!

Our first DPC topic is the Vikings. Here, we will be exploring where the Vikings originated and how they expanded, whilst always thinking about the question: were they raiders, traders or something else?
During year 5, pupils also have Forest School. Forest School sessions will run in order, starting with 5D, then 5P and finally 5S. Each class will have two half-terms of Forest School across the year. Please ensure they come to school in appropriate clothing for these sessions when it is their classes turn.
