SUMMER TERM 2026

We have blinked and reached the Summer term already! Year 5 are looking forward to an exciting and busy term. We will be studying Shakespeare’s 'A Midsummer Night’s Dream' and the poem, 'Night of the Gargoyles'; both will give many opportunities for drama and performance. A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a fantastic, engaging text that introduces pupils for Shakespeare and develops their understanding of multiple storylines in a narrative. Following this, we will be learning about plastic pollution and the impact this has with a focus on persuasive writing.

In maths, we will continue to follow the White Rose scheme. Our next units centre on geometry and decimals with many of the objectives focusing on coordinates, adding, subtracting and multiplying decimals. By the end of Year 5, we will also have covered shape, position and negative numbers.

Our next geography unit is all about deserts. We will be learning about life in the desert and making links to our science lifecycles unit. This unit builds on existing knowledge about biomes and asks pupils to consider the impact humans have globally on our deserts. In history, we will be learning about the legacy of the Ancient Greeks. As part of this topic, we have a visitor joining us for an exciting morning of time-travel. Please look out for more information about this closer to the time.  During this unit we will compare Sparta and Athens, looking at how their studies of science and philosophy have shaped our view of the world. Our science theme is lifecycles we will learn about the lifecycles of different animal groups, culminating in the study of our own human lifecycle.

We have some exciting work coming up in Art and D&T. In Art, we will be learning how to create portraits. As part of D&T lessons we will be learning how gears and pulleys work – this will be brought to life during our Bikeability Week. Following this, we will be developing a recipe and cooking.

In this term's PE, the focus will be on athletics skills and summer sports; all pupils are invited to join our after school athletics club on a Tuesday. Training on a Thursday will only be for Year 6 pupils competing in the Borough Sports competition. The 'Chance to Shine' cricket festival will also take place this term. Look out for further information closer to the time.

Year 5 are very excited to participate in Bikeability. There will be further communications with details about Bikeability. If you have any questions regarding your child’s participation or any need for equipment, please contact your child’s class teacher.
